The last week of September was a lovely time to be in this area of France. The weather was fairly mild and pleasant with lots of sunny days, but nice cool nights.  St. Bresson is a picture perfect village and Les Lis was a charming base for our explorations. Wherever we went, the drive there was almost as exciting as our destination because the views of the unusual
terrain were so spectacular- and some of the roads terrifying!

The house is very nicely updated and the modernized kitchen and large bathroom were especially appreciated by our group of four.   A glass of local wine on the upper deck overlooking the hills was a perfect end to busy days. As we sat there one evening, we heard the bells of the sheep and goats coming down from the hills to their shelter just next door.  Later in the
week we were invited to come see the baby lambs that had been born that week.

If you have read Tracy Chevalier's ("Girl with a Pearl Earring")  book, "The Virgin Blue", you will recognize many place names from this tale of the religious turmoil of 16th c. in this exact area of southern France. Another book I must read again after visiting Carcassonne (a long drive!) is the current best seller, "Labyrinth" by Kate Mosse, also about the same period of religious wars and persecution. We also visited Avignon and the Pont-du-Gard, though these, too were a bit more of a drive than we anticipated.

Whether you are looking for a secluded get-away or a base for exploration, Les Lis would be a good choice.  And though we did not indulge, we were aware also of the many outdoor sporting activities readily available nearby such as hiking, climbing and kayaking.
Of course, the local restaurants were excellent and our dinner at Les Norias was one of the highlights of our trip.

On a breathtaking hillside off a winding vineyard and wild flower-lined road, Les Lis cheerfully greets guests from a prominent corner of the small central plaza of St. Bresson. At once one is embraced by a sense of pristine calm amid the comedic chorus of the intermittent church bells, village dog backup vocals, and a goat herd chorus. The house is a medieval marvel of architecture combining original charm with stylish furnishings, primary colors, captivating art, and creature comforts galore. Each room transports the guest into a frisson of sensual delights. From the sweeping views of the “Writer’s Room” deck to the aromas of the breakfast porch, an atmosphere of sublime harmony is the essence of Les Lis.

Our respite of rest and relaxation was highlighted by adventures in hiking the Cevennes National Park, kayaking L’ Herault River, morning walks down to Le Cascade for a cool dip or an afternoon espresso and live music at the adjacent café. The Les Lis website was superb in assisting us in taking advantage of the local color. From markets to hermit’s abbeys...something awaits every traveler’s desire.
Les Lis is unique due to its remote location yet easy access, its appeal of the undiscovered, close enough but far enough away from the nearby over-touristed destinations of Southern France to meet the expectations all who are lucky enough to enter its threshold.

The house is beautifully decorated with comfortable furniture and a well-stocked kitchen. Being in St-Bresson is like going back in time with herds of sheep and shepherds as your neighbors.

Even though I speak very little French, the neighbors and all the people I met in the markets and towns were very nice and I was able to communicate fine. St-Bresson is also a convenient base from which to explore the area. I had a great time wine tasting at the vineyards, shopping at the open-air markets, and buying art! The local prices were so good I was able to pick out several items for a local New Hampshire shopkeeper who wanted to carry linens, pottery and other hand-made French items in her gift shop.
And of course, there was the French food and pastries. Les Norias was my very favorite restaurant, a short drive from the house, not terribly expensive (about US$100 for a 4-course meal including tip and wine for 2 people), but exquisite.

Our three week stay at Les Lis was a tempting look into our ‘other’ lives, our better selves.  I had just completed a novel and needed the time to recharge my batteries.  By the time I left, I not only had a fantastic stash of wine (thanks to a great book on the wines of the Languedocregion I had stashed into my suitcase) but also the outline for a new novel.  Honest. The photo of the butterflies was taken just outside our favorite vineyard, Mas Bruguiere. The other photo is my husband Ed serving wine at dinner at Les Lis.Les Lis is a true retreat.
